Stubborn Elaho Valley blaze expected to burn through summer

News

A 600 hectare forest fire burning west of Pemberton is expected to continue burning into the fall, according to a Coastal Fire Centre information officer.

Suzanne Bell said this week the fire hasn't changed in size since it was first sparked by lightning on Aug. 10. Seventy firefighters are working the blaze with help in the air from four or five helicopters.

"Winds have been pretty quiet in the valley the last few days, so that has really helped with the suppression there," said Bell.

"It is a larger fire and we expect it is probably going to be the weather that is going to put it out more than anything else. We are looking at the weather forecast for the weekend which has some rain in it so I'm sure that will help."

Bell said things are going very well with the fire at Mile 41 of the Elaho Forest Service Road, but she said she thinks it will be an ongoing effort that will continue into the fall.

Fire information officer Heidi Taylor said last week that the fire is 50 km west of Pemberton on the east side of the Elaho River. She said the fire poses no danger to people or structures.

Access to the area around the fire is limited. People are being asked not to travel past the gate at the 37.5-mile mark on the Elaho Forest Service Road.
