The Chief's latest edition comes to the coast from the interior of B.C. Reporter Susan Hollis landed in Squamish last Sunday (April 8) after a two and a half year stint as the editor of The Kootenay Weekly Express in Nelson.
"I was looking to improve and expand my experience, and was glad to hear back from The Chief because I had applied to the paper straight out of journalism school but at the time didn't have enough experience to get the job," said Hollis.
"A few years later, I can say 'mission accomplished'. I think the Squamish draw is that it's not too 'big city,' and it still has all the good things to offer."
Hollis, a born-and-raised B.C. kid, grew up camping, skiing, and hiking with her family throughout the province, which in turn sparked a life-long love affair with the natural beauty of the Sea to Sky corridor.
She received an undergraduate degree in political science from Acadia University in Nova Scotia, a year of which she completed at a university in the south of France.
Upon returning, she attended a one-year journalism school program at Vancouver's Langara College, during which time she won a competitive internship at The Tico Times in Costa Rica.
After a year living Tica-style in Latin America, she was drawn back to the Pacific Northwest.
"Everything I have done has pointed me in this professional direction, even when it has taken me away from B.C. I love words, mountain communities, and oddly enough I even love the pressure of deadlines," she said.
"I haven't had a chance to explore Squamish yet, but I know it's going to be a good fit."
