Suspected drive-by shooting damages apartments

Several witnesses report hearing shots and seeing vehicle speed away Saturday (Oct. 9)

Police are investigating a suspected drive-by shooting that led to bullets hitting two Spectacle Building apartments Saturday night (Oct. 9).

No one was injured in the Garibaldi Estates melee and police are still unsure who was the intended target. However they do suspect it came from a moving vehicle, according to a RCMP press release.

Initial reports indicated police units had also been damaged by gunfire, however that was not the case, said St. Sgt. Guy Pollock."There is no reasons for public alarm, regrettably this is the type of crime becoming more frequent throughout society, communities." he said.

At 9:06 p.m. police received a report of shots fired in the area of the Spectacle Building on Tantalus Road. Several witnesses reported hearing three to five gunfire blasts and seeing a vehicle speeding away southbound on Tantalus Road.

Members and a police service dog team attended immediately, discovering two unoccupied apartments on the east side of the building damaged by gunshots.

It looks like the shots came out of a vehicle and we havent determined if they were intended for two people seen running away or if it was intended for an apartment unit itself, said Ritchie.

A forensic identification team located three bullet holes in the two units and seized evidence on scene.

The matter remains under investigation and police are asking anyone with information to contact the Squamish RCMP detachment at 604 892-6100 or anonymously at Crimestoppers at 1 800 222-TIPS.
