Squamish Fire Rescue used the "jaws of life" mechanical device to extract accident victims involved in a two-vehicle collision believed to be the cause of drunk driving.

At 12:15 a.m. on Saturday (June 3), a 34-year-old female driving a 1999 Toyota pick-up truck northbound on Highway 99 crossed into the southbound lane at Scott Crescent causing a head-on collision with a 2000 Ford Explorer occupied by two males aged 50 and 26. One of the vehicles' occupants was ejected upon impact and all three involved were transported to hospital with serious injuries. RCMP closed the highway for more than an hour.

Police suspect the involvement of alcohol and continues to investigate.

Saved by a tree

Fire Rescue also had to use the jaws of life to extract the lone occupant of a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am that lost control and careened down an embankment on Highway 99 near Alice Lake Sunday (June 4) at 1 a.m. The 22-year-old driver was saved from falling further down the embankment when a tree got in his path. Rescue efforts were done with the tree supporting the vehicle. A blood sample was obtained and police are investigating the collision as a case of impaired driving.

Warrant issued for man convicted of assaulting officer

Warrants are out for the arrest of a local man who failed to appear to a sentencing hearing for assaulting a Squamish RCMP officer. David Furey was stopped and arrested in Squamish last fall for driving a stolen vehicle. At the scene of the arrest, Furey backed the vehicle into an RCMP officer knocking him down. Furey was sentenced in absentia to four months in jail for the assault and has yet to face sentencing for possession of the stolen vehicle. Anyone coming into contact with Furey is asked to call RCMP at 604 892-6100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Drinking and driving through don't mix

A 37-year-old male was arrested for impaired driving after he was seen mixing a rye and coke in his vehicle while waiting to pick up a food order at a local drive-through restaurant. RCMP took the driver into custody and registered breath readings over three times the legal limit of .08. The driver is to appear in court July 12.

Suspected drug dealers arrested

RCMP executed a search warrant - the second in three months - on residents of a house at the 37000 block of Second Avenue.

RCMP arrested two males aged 41 and 49 after seizing heroine and crack cocaine in the residence.
