A man RCMP suspects of numerous residential Brackendale break-ins was arrested last week after allegedly being caught red-handed.

An RCMP report states that a Brackendale homeowner called police after discovering Blair Joseph McHugh, 25, inside his residence at noon on Thursday, Nov. 9.

Police said McHugh fled on foot but was quickly captured on Axen Road by Squamish Nation Peacekeepers and RCMP. The Squamish resident was arrested and charged with break, enter, theft and possession of break and enter tools.

Police said at the time of the arrest, McHugh was also carrying jewelry and money from the Brackendale residence. McHugh appeared court Tuesday (Nov. 14).RCMP is still investigating the possibility of McHugh's involvement in other Brackendale robberies on Arrowhead and Cottonwood roads.

Fake gun suspected in would-be 7-11 robbery

A would-be thief who targeted the Garibaldi Highlands 7-11 with a gun that the night clerk suspected was a fake fled the scene empty-handed, according to an RCMP report.

At 3 a.m. Tuesday (Nov. 14) the man, wearing an army fatigue jacket, blue jeans and a facemask, pointed a brown and black 9 mm replica handgun at the clerk on duty. The suspect demanded money and fled on foot before receiving the money, states an RCMP news release.

An investigation is ongoing.

Furry Creek tree faller badly injured

A tree faller working at a Furry Creek industrial logging operation was seriously injured on Thursday (Nov. 9) when a 40-foot tree fell, trapping him.

B.C. Ambulance crews and loggers took around one hour to remove him from under the fallen tree. B.C. Ambulance workers then stabilized and immobilized the victim, who had suffered spinal, pelvic and leg injuries.

Search and Rescue (SAR), Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance and loggers carried the injured worker 100 metres up an embankment where he was loaded into a B.C. Air Ambulance and flown to a Vancouver-area hospital.

Construction crew punctures Business Park gas main

Fire Rescue and RCMP responded to a natural gas leak on Industrial Way on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 9:30 a.m. when a contractor severed a gas line. Fire Rescue and RCMP had to control the area and divert traffic for about two hours while Terasen repaired the break without incident.

"It's always a dangerous situation because natural gas is flammable and lighter than air so there's always a chance that with wind currents you can get pockets of gas at an explosive level, so you want to keep sources of ignition away from the area," said firefighter Bob Fulton.

Recycle bin targeted by vandal

On Tuesday (Nov. 14) at 5:21 a.m. a Carney's recycle bin on Government Road near the municipal public works yard was set on fire and was seriously damaged when a propane cylinder in the bin exploded.

RCMP is searching for a person witnessed cycling away from the scene.
