Suspicious encounter probed

Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

Police are seeking the public's help in locating a suspicious man and a young woman or girl who was seen talking to him at a bus stop along Squamish Valley Road last week.

Last Tuesday (Sept. 11), a 13-year-old girl was waiting for the school bus at a bus stop near the Cheekye River when a man in a green or turquoise vehicle, possibly a Pontiac Sunfire or Chevy Cavalier, drove by numerous times and stared at her, making her "very uncomfortable," RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in a statement.

After the bus arrived and the girl got on, she saw the same man pull over and speak to a blonde female, who several times shook her head as if saying "no" to the man, Pride said. The passenger-side door of the vehicle was open, he said.

The man is described as in his mid-30s, with brown spiky hair, wearing a grey shirt and a big silver chain. He was described as being big but not fat, with a long chin. The young woman, possibly in her late teens, was skinny with highlighted blonde hair and was wearing jeans and a white shirt with blue stripes, and carrying a brown leather bag.

Police are asking that anyone else who may have witnessed last week's encounter or had similar encounters to step forward with information. As well, Pride urged parents and teachers to remind youngsters about not talking to or getting into vehicles with strangers.

Those with information are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or Squamish RCMP at (604) 892-6100.

Gear stolen

On Friday (Sept. 14), police received a report of a theft from a vehicle parked in the Sandman Hotel on Discovery Way. The theft occurred sometime between Thursday (Sept. 13) at 10:30 p.m. and Friday at 5:30 a.m. A vehicle window was pried open and a grey-and-green MEC backpack, a North Face sleeping bag, men's Merrill boots, a red Columbia bag and a small shovel were taken, Pride said.

Axe taken

Also on Friday, police received a report of a gas axe, valued at $1,200, having been stolen from a construction trailer that was parked near the intersection of Alice Lake Road and Highway 99. The item had been locked to the trailer but the locks were cut off sometime during the day. The victim reported that he had been working approximately 300 metres from where the trailer was parked, Pride said.

Bikes swiped

Also on Friday, two bikes were reported as having been stolen from a home in the 37000 block of Magnolia Crescent two days earlier. A cable lock securing the bikes was cut to gain access, Pride said. The bikes were a white men's 21-speed Norco Shore One and a bronze-coloured, men's 21-speed Norco Shore Three.

Man arrested

On Saturday (Sept. 15) at around 9:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a domestic fight at an apartment in the 40000 block of Willow Crescent. At the scene, police arrested a 42-year-old Squamish man for physically assaulting his wife.
