Suspicious fires make for busy night

Briefs

Briefs from the RCMP and Squamish Fire Rescue:

A series of weekend garbage fires earlier this month kept firefighters on the run Sept. 2 at 11 p.m. and the next morning.Firefighter Bob Fulton said crews dealt with suspicious fires about ever two hours through the night. The location of the fires included a compactor at the recycling centre on Government Road, two garbage cans at Squamish Elementary School, the dumpster behind Shoppers Drug Mart and the last fire was in the dumpster behind Dairy Queen. The fire in the cardboard compactor damaged the electrical and hydraulic components to the tune of $3,500 in damage.

Fulton said the last fire was reported at 4:36 a.m.

"We don't know that there is any one person involved," said Fulton. "Apparently, there were many youths on the street that morning. The RCMP is investigating this with us."

Fulton pointed out that starting fires like this is a criminal offence. He also noted that fire setters could be held financially responsible for damages.

The following weekend firefighters dealt with two more set fires. On Sept. 11 a fire was started inside a shed on the vacant lot at the northeast corner of Mamquam and Government Roads. Fulton said they also dealt with a garbage fire at Howe Sound Secondary School the same night.

Hunters locatedTwo overdue hunters were located unharmed last weekend by Squamish Search and Rescue (SAR). The Squamish RCMP was notified that the 14-year-old male and his 46-year-old uncle were overdue as of Sunday (Sept. 11).

A helicopter was used to helped SAR volunteers locate the pair.

The vehicle they traveled in was located eight kilometers past the Nine Mile Bridge on the Mamquam Forest Service Road. According to the RCMP, the man was located shortly after the van was discovered. The boy was found shortly after.
