While Squamish residents Jim and Claire Harvey were working and traveling the world having adventures, little did they know their exploits would years later benefit students in their hometown.

Jim Harvey will tell some of the interesting stories of their travels, with an accompanying slide show March 27 at 7 p.m. in the Squamish Public Library Meeting Room, with proceeds going in support of the Don Ross Secondary School Outdoor Leadership Program.

"We lived overseas for 10 years in places like Africa and Central America, and when we had the opportunity to travel, we would always go off to exotic destinations," he said. "Because we lived in war-torn countries we had quite a few of these rest and relaxation opportunities."

The couple spent the decade professionally employed with such international aid organizations as the Red Cross and Care, among others.

"We worked in tough conditions," he said. "It was also frustrating work, such as in war zones in Africa where your work could disappear on you."

The presentation March 27 is titled Lakes, Lizards, Ladakh and Riding the Roof on the Nose of the Devil.

"The slide presentation is on a couple of the countries and trips we went to, one was up to the Kashmir area of northern India, and did a nice trip to the remote Buddhist/Tibetan enclave of Ladakh," he said. "The other trip was when we lived in Nicaragua and we went south to Ecuador and did a hike through the Andes to the Amazon side."

Harvey called Ladakh "one of the most unbelievable spots around".

"We were on one of the first commercial convoys to cross the paths into Ladakh," he said.

Learn more about Harvey's fascinating travels and support a worthwhile school program at the same time, March 27 in the Squamish Public Library at 7 p.m. Entry is by donation.
