The Chief named best in Canada

Squamish's newspaper captures three more national first-place honours

Squamish's community newspaper this week was named the best in Canada in its circulation category.

The Chief, which last month won six awards from the Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA) for writing, photography and website design, was announced on Tuesday (April 9) as the winner in the 2,000 to 2,999 circulation category in all three CCNA 2013 General Excellence competitions Best All-Around Newspaper, Best Editorial Page and Best Front Page.

The Bracebridge (Ont.) Examiner finished second and the Taber (Alta.) Times third in the judging for Best All-Around Newspaper in the grouping.

Earlier, The Chief was announced as the winner of three other first-place 2013 CCNA awards reporter Rebecca Aldous in the Best Feature Writing category and reporter/photographer Ben Lypka for Best Sports Photo, and www.squamishchief.com for Best Website. Aldous also earned a second and two third-place writing and photography awards.

The most recent awards gave The Chief six first-place honours in the 2013 CCNA contest, moving it past the Yukon News (five) as the Canadian community newspaper with the most first-place awards. The News totalled 11 awards overall compared to nine for The Chief.
