The Chief newspaper took two silvers and a bronze at the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association (BCYCNA)'s Ma Murray Awards Saturday night (April 10) in Richmond.

The Chief took second place in the Newspaper Excellence category for best overall paper in its circulation category throughout the province and territory.

The judges called The Chief "A creative, clean well-organized paper with a clear and simple front page. Writing is strong and photos are sharp with a good-sized news hole, a good local photo on almost every page and a strong classified section.

"The Chief clearly goes out of its way to connect with its community. Nice work!"

Chief editor Sylvie Paillard also placed second in the Best Photo Essay category for co-ordinating the 2009 feature, Day in the Life of Squamish. And production manager Louise Dewar placed third in the Best Collaborative Ad Design category.

"We're very pleased to once again be recognized by our peers in the community newspaper industry," said Chief publisher Tim Shoults. "It takes a great community to produce a great community newspaper, and we're very fortunate to be serving Squamish."

The Chief has placed in the top three in general excellence at both the provincial and national newspaper awards for the last six years running. The Chief also placed second for General Excellence in this year's Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA) Better Newspapers competition.
