The Squamish Chief has been nominated for three provincial Ma Murray journalism awards, it was announced Thursday evening.
The 2019 BC and Yukon Community Newspaper Association awards recognize the achievements of the association’s 97 member newspapers in the province and Yukon.
Among newspapers of our size, The Chief was nominated for General Excellence.
The way these awards work, if you are nominated you are guaranteed gold, silver or bronze.
Former Chief reporter Haley Ritchie, reporter Steven Chua and editor Jennifer Thuncher were also nominated in the new multimedia digital series award category for the paper's 2018 municipal election campaign coverage, which included videos, online questionnaires, an all-candidates forum, and extensive print and online coverage of the road to municipal hall. Ritchie, aided by Chua and Thuncher, led this coverage.
Thuncher and photojournalist David Buzzard were also nominated for their digital, print and video work on the "Piecing together the 1957 crash" feature about the airplane wing found in a Government Road ditch last summer.
The awards will be presented at the Ma Murray Awards Gala on Saturday, April 27 at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond.
