Theft suspect arrested

Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

A Squamish man who was arrested on an outstanding warrant for a business theft that occurred four months ago also faces charges in at least three other crimes and is under investigation for possible involvement in other property-related incidents, Squamish RCMP said this week.

Lewis Maton, 41, was arrested last Thursday (April 11) when police attended a home in the 1700 block of Garden Place in Valleycliffe on another matter, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in a statement.

Maton is a suspect in a theft from a business that occurred in December 2012. He also faced a charge in relation to the theft of a mountain bike from a home in the 1400 block of Pemberton Avenue on March 11 and two business burglaries that occurred in the 38000 block of Cleveland Avenue on April 2, Pride said.

When police arrived at the Garden Place home last Thursday, Maton attempted to flee through a window but was apprehended. In addition to the above-noted crimes, Police are also evaluating the suspect's possible involvement in other local property-related crimes, Pride wrote.

Door dislodged

On Monday (April 15) at around 1:30 a.m., police responding to an alarm at a business in the 37000 block of Cleveland Avenue found that a door had been dislodged, but that no access gained. The same business had been broken into on March 9, when a rock was thrown through a glass door and a computer stolen. A 30-year-old Squamish woman was arrested with the stolen computer the following day and faces a charge of possession of stolen property.

Items stolen

On Wednesday (April 10), police received a report of a residential break-and-enter at a home in the 40000 block of Thunderbird Ridge between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Access was gained through a rear window. A snowboard, climbing great, a camera, a computer and three firearms were stolen. Police are investigating.

Man arrested

On Saturday (April 13) at around 10:30 a.m., police attended a home in the 39000 block of Government Road in response to a report of a fight in progress. Police arrested a 32-year-old Squamish man for assaulting his 29-year-old spouse during an argument. In a matter unrelated to the alleged assault, police also seized three firearms and are pursuing charges for the unauthorized possession and careless use (storage) of a firearm, Pride said.

Speeding biker nabbed

A motorcyclist who had been clocked at more than 140 kilometres per hour on Highway 99 had his motorcycle impounded, his licence suspended and fines totalling more than $1,100 after having been arrested on Tuesday (April 16).

The arrest was the result of interagency cooperation between Squamish RCMP, West Vancouver Police and Air Two, one of the Lower Mainland's traffic safety helicopters, West Vancouver Police officials wrote in a statement. Squamish RCMP alerted West Vancouver Police after the biker had failed to stop on the Sea to Sky Highway. The latter agency then alerted Air Two, which helped police locate and stop the rider as he exited the highway in the Horseshoe Bay area.

The Sea to Sky Highway passes through policing jurisdiction of both West Vancouver Police and Squamish RCMP and both agencies work together on an ongoing basis to safely locate and apprehend offenders, officials said.
