Speeding high-end cars
Squamish RCMP received multiple complaints of high-end sports cars involved with the Diamond Rally event speeding and driving erratically on Highway 99. Members from the Sea to Sky traffic section diligently patrolled the highway and two vehicles were found to be grossly exceeding the speed limit. The vehicles were seized for excessive speed and the drivers were both issued fines prior to being released at scene.
Bear cub killed
Police attended a report of a black bear cub that was accidentally struck by a vehicle in the dark on Highway 99 at Industrial Avenue on May 2. Although a bear cub was killed in the collision, the cub’s mother and another cub were located at scene. The surviving cub and the mother bear had become separated during the collision and the surviving cub was found lying on the highway. Conservation officers and RCMP officers checked the surviving cub for injuries and once it was safe to do so, they managed to release the cub back to the mother bear.
Drunk in public
Police dealt with several reports of intoxicated people causing issues in the downtown area over the course of the evening of May 4. At 7 p.m., a highly intoxicated man was found sleeping on a bench outside the Squamish Library. He was unable to care for himself due to his level of intoxication. At 10 p.m., a highly-intoxicated woman was located in the laneway behind municipal hall. She too was found to be unable to care for herself due to her level of intoxication. At 10:49 p.m., a highly intoxicated woman was found sleeping on the sidewalk near Second Avenue and Vancouver Street. She was also found to be unable to care for herself due to her level of intoxication. At 11:40 p.m., police attended the laneway outside of the Knotty Burl for a report of a woman who was arguing with a taxi driver. The woman was highly intoxicated and said that she had no wallet and no money to pay for a cab ride that she had just taken. All parties were arrested and later issued violation tickets for being intoxicated in a public place and released, once they were sober enough to care for themselves.
Bicycle stolen
A man called the Squamish RCMP to report the theft of a black Supercycle Phantom mountain bike from the Greyhound bus station sometime during the day on May 1. The bike is still lost and police are actively investigating the incident.
Vehicle stolen
RCMP were dispatched to Highway 99 at Squamish Valley Forest Service Road for a report of a broken down vehicle. When police arrived, they found a male behind the wheel of a Honda that had been stolen from New Westminister the night before. The man was arrested and found to be breaching a probation order. He was held for court and the car was seized.
Fighting at park
Police responded to a report of two intoxicated men fighting in the lane behind municipal hall in the downtown area during the early evening hours of May 1. They had separated by the time police arrived. One of the men was sober enough to care for himself and was released at the scene, while the other was initially arrested and later released for medical treatment. No charges stemmed from the incident.
