Solar panel theft
Two solar panels valued at $10,000 were taken overnight from the “Caution Cyclists” signs along Highway 99 just north of Porteau Cove on June 6, according to Squamish RCMP. The panels were bolted together in a metal bracket. Officers are asking for anyone with information to come forward.
iTunes card scam
A woman told police that she had been defrauded of $1,000 by a man claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency on June 5. Police say the suspect called from 1-289-651-1513 and spoke with an English accent before changing to a South Asian accent. Squamish RCMP say the woman was directed to purchase $1,000 worth of iTunes cards and provide the PIN numbers to the caller. In a separate incident on June 8, a man also received a call from the same phone number. A man claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency also asked him to buy iTunes cards.
Rockslide on highway
A rockslide damaged several vehicles in Porteau Cove on June 8, police say. Several people stopped and cleared the rocks off the highway before other vehicles were damaged. No one was hurt, but three vehicles had to be towed away.
Black bear sighting
Officers were called to check up on a black bear in the Payless Towing lot on Enterprise Way on June 10. Staff members said the bear stood up on its hind legs and growled before hopping the fence and disappearing into the wooded area south of the lot.
Farm break-in
A Yamaha Big Bear 350 CC ATV was stolen and a Kubota BX25D backhoe tractor was dismantled following a break-in to a farm on Moody Drive, according the Squamish RCMP. Officers say sometime overnight on June 11, the locks and chains to the farm’s gates were cut, leaving those doors open. As a result, five horses escaped and ran out to Paradise Valley Road after midnight. The horses were wrangled by neighbours and kept safe until the owner could find them. Officers are investigating and ask anyone with information on the case to come forward.
Bike stolen
A BMX bike was taken from outside the Independent Grocer between 10 a.m. and noon on June 5, according to Squamish RCMP. The bike has white rims, thin green pin stripes and a black seat. Police are investigating.
Unattended campfire
An unattended campfire was dangerously close to a house on June 10, officers say. The fire was found at a construction site in 3300 block of Mamquam Road and is not suspicious.
