Three seriously hurt in head-on collision

Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

Driver error is suspected as one probable cause of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 99 north of Squamish last weekend that left three people injured.

The head-on crash, which was first reported on Saturday (Feb. 18) at around 7:30 p.m., occurred about one kilometer south of the Culliton Creek Bridge, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said in a statement.

Two occupants of the northbound vehicle involved in the crash were seriously injured, while the lone driver of the southbound vehicle was listed in critical condition at a Vancouver-area hospital, Pride said. Police did not provide details about the victims other than to say they were not from the Squamish area.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the crash, but driver error "is being investigated; charges are pending," Pride said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

The highway between Squamish and Whistler was closed for about two hours as a result of the crash.

Substation broken into

On Thursday (Feb. 16), Squamish RCMP received a report of a break-in at the B.C. Hydro substation on Squamish Valley Road north of Brackendale. A shed had been broken into and reels of copper wire were removed from the shed but not from the property. No other items were stolen.

Suspect arrested

A 23-year-old Squamish woman was arrested on Saturday (Feb. 18) in connection with an alleged assault and robbery of a 47-year-old woman who was known to her. The incident occurred in the 1100 block of Wilson Crescent in Dentville. The victim reported that she was assaulted and robbed of a small amount of cash and medication. The suspect was arrested near the scene of the incident, Pride said.

Visitor involved in fight

On Sunday (Feb. 19) at around 1:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a man having been assaulted near the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Pemberton Street in downtown Squamish.

Officers spoke to a witness who said a drunken man had left a nearby pub and became involved in a confrontation with a group of other males, with the first man possibly having instigated the dispute, Pride said. A fight ensued, resulting in the first man having been knocked down, while others left the scene. Police located the intoxicated man, a 23-year-old visitor from Halifax, N.S., who was unco-operative, Pride said. The matter is under investigation.
