Trail building with beer

The Howe Sound Brew Pub is launching a new annual initiative Saturday (May 26) that will have locals building trails by hoisting pints of ale. The Ales for Trails fundraiser encourages anyone who loves trails, beer or great music to join the Squamish Off Road Cycling Association (SORCA) at the Brew Pub, buy a SORCA glass and have it filled with beer for free. "This is a Brew Pub initiative that will be a yearly event to raise money for a specific trail around Squamish," said manager Heidi Nielsen. "This year's fundraiser will be to fall a log and build a bridge at George's Crossing, a trail that is in need of repair."Vancouver's Rich Hope and his Evil Doers will provide all the entertainment an audience could desire with a blues-rock sound described as a young George Thorogood. "There's a bunch of people who play what they call 'blues' who just play blues clubs and play just like every other band. It's not really my scene. It's a bit stale," writes Hope on his blog site. "I prefer it a little sh**tier. The blues is a dirty girl."All money from tickets purchased will go SORCA to fix the trail. The event also brings awareness to Trail Maintenance Days, which organizers hope gets significant support this year as the community ramps up toward the Test of Metal. "I think it is important for people who are riding the trails to realize that there is work involved in maintaining the trails," said Nielsen.
