Every year on Halloween night kids make use of those three words to get sweets and treats for themselves. But for the second year in a row, the kids of the HSSS Interact Club make an exception. When they say "trick or treat," it is for a good cause. Unlike many of their peers, the members of the Interact Club prefer not to collect candy.

"We will collect any kind of non-perishable food though," said Grade 12 student Des Bompas Brown, a main organizer. The students will be going around collecting some more substantial fare for the foodbank and Squamish Homeless Shelter."The idea for the Halloween project came up last year during an Interact Club meeting," says Lillian Avis, member of the Interact Club.

"We wanted to do something good for the community. And since there are many homeless and hungry people in Squamish, we thought it would be a good idea to collect food for them."

After last year's great success, the 14 HSSS students, under the lead of Sheri Davis, set their goal weight at one ton. "We wish to collect even more though," said Brown.

Dressed up and split into groups of two, they will be going around to Brackendale, Garibaldi Highlands and the Garibaldi Estates between 5:30 and 7 p.m. on Halloween (Wednesday, Oct. 31).

For those people who know they won't be home during this time, but would still like to donate, student Esme Sturton suggests: "Leave your donated items on your doorstep."

For residents of Valleycliffe and Downtown Squamish there will also be a donations box at Howe Sound Secondary School until Nov. 2.
