Two lawsuits over RCMP building

News

The new RCMP and Emergency Services building is at the centre of two separate lawsuits filed by contractors looking to place builder's liens on the structure.

Metro Roofing & Sheet Metal Ltd filed the most recent claim against the District of Squamish involving the building at 1000 Finch Drive.

The roofer's claim is for work and materials valued at $43,023.73.

Mayor Ian Sutherland said the roof work done by Metro was unacceptable.

"They had to remove and replace the roofing above the cells at their cost because of poor workmanship," reported DOS chief administrative officer Kim Anema.

The DOS is now working with Unitech Construction Management Ltd., the company hired to oversee work on the building, to prepare a defense statement.

Trustees Westgeest and Associates launched the first lawsuit on behalf of Coast Electric Design and Installation (1996) Ltd.

Westgeest is a trustee in bankruptcy of the estate of Coast Electric.

Westgeest named the DOS and Unitech in its lawsuit, which was filed in the first week of April.

The Coast Electric claim is for a $355,589.83 builder's lien for electrical materials, work and services put into the building.

Both lawsuits were filed with the BC Supreme Court in Vancouver.

The final price of the new building was $325,000 over the budget amount. Coun. Corinne Lonsdale says she calculates the cost overrun at as much as $500,000.
