Two nabbed for fraud

Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

A man and a woman are facing a fraud charge after an incident that involved gaining the trust of a man who agreed to cash a cheque for them.

Last Monday (Aug. 26), a man and woman approached a man and asked him to cash a cheque for them, Squamish RCMP Staff Sgt. Brian Cumming wrote in a statement.

The man gave the pair $1,800, but when he tried to cash the cheque at a bank, it turned out to have been stolen and the bank would not honour it, Cumming said. The two people who gave the man the cheque were identified and arrested. Local police have recommend that the pair be charged with fraud.

Items stolen

Last Monday (Aug. 26), a resident of the 40300 block of Government Road reported that her home had been broken into while she was away on vacation. Entry was gained by smashing a window. Stolen were a laptop computer and a gold ring.

Bikes taken

Three bikes were reported stolen in two separate incidents during the past week.

On Tuesday (Aug. 27), a Rocky Mountain Slayer 70 mountain was stolen from in front of a home in the 40100 block of Government Road.

On Monday (Sept. 2), two mountain bikes - a white Intense 951 and a black Iron Horse Sunday - were reportedly stolen from the back of a pickup truck that was parked in the 40500 block of Thunderbird Ridge. The bikes had been locked in the back of the truck, Cumming said.

Speed a factor in collisions

Speed is believed to have been a factor in four separate motor vehicle crashes that occurred last Monday through Thursday (Aug. 26 to 29) on Highway 99 in the Lions Bay area.

Three of the crashes were of the single-vehicle variety, while the fourth involved a second vehicle. Two occurred on Aug. 26, one on Aug. 27 and one on Aug. 29. Those inside the vehicles suffered only minor injuries, but there was "significant damage" to some of the vehicles, Cumming said.

"Although none of the collisions involved alcohol, all involved speed relative to the conditions," he said.

Vehicles impounded

On Saturday (Aug. 31), police conducted a speed enforcement check at Highway 99 and Depot Road, resulting in four vehicles being impounded for seven days and their drivers being issued tickets for excessive speed.

School-zone warning issued

With school back in session, Cumming reminded motorists that 30 km/h speed limits are in effect in school zones from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days.

"The fabulous summer weather we have enjoyed this year is waning and slick, wet roads have contributed to several collisions on Highway 99 in the past few weeks," he said.

As well, motorists travelling on Saturday (Sept. 7) should plan ahead, as travel restrictions related to the GranFondo bike race will undoubtedly cause some delays. For a full rundown on race-related restrictions, see page A7.
