Squamish RCMP this week dealt with a rash of incidents involving thefts from vehicles and in five of the six cases, the vehicles had been left unlocked.
The most serious incident occurred on Sunday (Feb. 10), when a grey 2013 Dodge Caravan was broken into while parked in the Stawamus Chief parking lot sometime between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in a statement.
The vehicle had been left unlocked, and a backpack containing gear valued at around $500 was stolen, along with two wallets.
On Thursday (Feb. 7), police received a report of a truck having been broken into overnight while parked at a home in the 40000 block of Government Road. A pair of sunglasses and some change were taken. On the same night, two other vehicles along the same stretch of road were broke into. Stolen were an iPod Touch and miscellaneous smaller items. All three vehicles had been left unlocked.
Also on Thursday, police received a report of a vehicle having been broken into while parked at Lions Bay Marina. Stolen were a validation tag, insurance and related documents. The vehicle had been parked in the same spot for a number of days, so it's unclear when the actual theft occurred, Pride said.
On Friday (Feb. 8), police received a report of a vehicle having been broken into while parked outside a hotel in the 39000 block of Discovery Way. The driver's-side window was smashed. Two pair of sunglasses and a blue North Face jacket were stolen. The vehicle was scratched on the passenger side and the driver's-side door was damaged.
Boathouse targeted
On Wednesday (Feb. 6), police received a report that items had been stolen from a boat that was inside a boathouse near the 1400 block of Pemberton Avenue. No signs of forced entry were noticed. Stolen were a quantity of liquor and fishing rods, and a 10-foot boat that had been inside the boathouse. Police are investigating.
