Firefighters used a helicopter to douse on a small forest fire that ignited on Monday (Sept. 3) behind Totem Hall.
The cause of the fire, which broke out between 6 and 7 p.m., is unknown. Smoke from the fire could be seen billowing skyward from downtown Squamish and Highway 99.
Fire trucks from both Squamish Fire Rescue and the B.C. Wildfire Management Branch were parked along Stawamus Road on the Stawamus Reserve, near Totem Hall, while crews determined how best to battle the blaze. However, because it was in an area that's not accessible by road, firefighters were having difficulty accessing the fire.
A helicopter equipped with a water scoop was deployed at around 6:30 p.m. and began scooping up water from Howe Sound and dumping it on the blaze. It took a few loads of water before the fire was out.
