Former Whistler resident Zube Aylward has been identified by family as the man who was found dead under suspicious circumstances near Seton Portage this weekend. Aylward is perhaps best known as the artist behind Whistler's iconic Mushroom House in Emerald Estates.

The RCMP is investigating a report of a kidnapping and suspicious death on a remote rural road outside of Seton Portage, according to a release.

Police received the report at 1:36 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 and attended the scene on Highline Road, where they located the deceased, a 71-year-old man.

Reached by phone, Dale Aylward confirmed to Pique that the deceased was his brother, former Whistler resident Zube Aylward. Aylward is perhaps best known as the artist who designed the iconic Mushroom House, a 3,000-square-foot home in Emerald Estates that was inspired by the glacial formations found around Whistler.

Due to the circumstances of the incident, the Southeast District Major Crime Unit has taken the lead on the investigation, with assistance from the Lillooet RCMP and the RCMP's Southeast District Forensic Identification Services.

"This appears to be an isolated incident and investigators have no information to suggest that the greater public is at further risk," the release stated.

Contacted for further information on the death, Cpl. Madonna Saunderson said that no additional details will be released to the public at this early stage. "The only information I have to release is what's already out there," she explained.
