Cause of head-on collision near Lions Bay still under investigation

Two young women have been identified as having died in a horrific, head-on crash that occurred on Highway 99 on the weekend.

Olivia Sonja Robertson, of Collingwood, Ont., and Valentine Leborgne of Los Altos, Calif., died when the vehicle being driven by Robertson crossed the centerline and struck an oncoming pickup truck on Saturday (Nov. 23) at around 7:25 p.m., the B.C. Coroners Service reported on Monday (Nov. 25). Both were 19.

Two others who were passengers in the northbound Jeep Cherokee were injured, one critically, when the vehicle collided with a Chevrolet pickup truck. The crash resulted in a 10-hour closure of the highway about five kilometres north of Lions Bay.

The four victims were all students at the University of British Columbia, authorities said. The victim who suffered critical injuries was at Vancouver General Hospital, while the one whose injuries were less severe was at Lions Gate Hospital. Her recovery is expected to take weeks an possibly months, the UBC campus newspaper Ubyssey reported.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
