Well, the hard part’s done. The District of North Vancouver’s Montroyal Bridge over Mosquito Creek hit a major milestone last month.
Crews did the heavy living, so to speak, overnight on Jan. 23 using a crane to hoist six 40-metre girders weighing 54 tonnes (119,000 pounds) each. North Van District staff have released an impressive time-lapse video of the work being done.
The project is on schedule to be completed in the summer of 2018, according to the District.
When it reopens, it will have two lanes of traffic, sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides as well as a new sidewalk on the north side of Montroyal Blvd (from the bridge west to Palisade Drive) and new street lighting.
The original wood bridge was reaching the end of its 60-year lifespan when construction on the replacement began earlier this year. The $8.5-million cost is covered through the district’s asset management program.
