Volunteers, luminaries sought for Relay for Life

Community

The Canadian Cancer Society is looking for volunteers for the first annual Relay For Life event on June 24 at Brennan Park.

The organizers are looking for people to help with all aspects of the event from set-up to helping sell luminaries, to children's activities, face painting, check-in staff, parking attendants, Cancer Smart Shop helpers and event office staff.

Relay For Life is a celebration of cancer survivors and a tribute to the life of loved ones. It inspires hope, faith and the belief that someday the world will be cancer-free. On June 24 at Brennan Park teams of eight to 10 people will set up camp and take turns walking and running around a track for 12 hours starting at 7 p.m.

In a moving ceremony at sunset, luminaries are placed around the track and lit in honour of cancer survivors and in memory of loved ones who have lost their battle with cancer. The luminaries provide light and inspiration to participants.

The public can participate in this heartwarming event by having a candle lit in honour or memory of a loved one. Luminaries can be purchased online at www.bc.cancer.ca or by calling or emailing the contact below. The organizers also extend a special invitation to survivors to participate by walking the first lap of the 2005 Relay For Life. The survivors Victory Lap acknowledges and celebrates the courage and success of cancer survivors.

Registration for team participation is still open until May 31.

For more information, to purchase a luminary, register for a team or the survivors lap, call 604-898-1012, email [email protected] or go online at www.bc.cancer.ca.
