Warm hearts on cold nights

It's that time of year again when the warmth of winter clothing makes all the difference. But for many in the community, insulation from the elements is a luxury.

It's that time of year again when the warmth of winter clothing makes all the difference. But for many in the community, insulation from the elements is a luxury. Local realtors Debbie Anderson and Joanne Ennis are coordinating efforts to get the much-needed insulation of coats and blankets to those who need it most.

"It's a way of giving back to the community," said Anderson. "Each office in Squamish has an individual that is collecting bags for us. I think we had over 300 bags last year, which is quite good for this area. And we are very grateful for all the contributions and very thankful for such a gracious community - they're very giving."

The local realtors' efforts are part of the region-wide program, Realtors Care Blanket Drive, now in its 13th year. 21Last year, realtors collected 3,365 bags of blankets, sleeping bags, tarps, winter coats and warm clothing on behalf of over 30 local charities from Squamish to Hope.

Are local charitable donations for the homeless and disadvantaged growing?

"Yes definitively, definitively," said Anderson. "More realtors are aware of it too, so they promote it more. Realtors always mention this around this around this time of year, especially when it gets cold, they think about it right away."

Realtors are looking for items that are clean and in good shape including comforters, blankets, sheets, sleeping bags, tarps, winter coats for men, women and children, scarves, hats, mitts, socks, boots, shoes, and warm clothing of all sizes including jeans, sweaters, turtlenecks, long-sleeved shirts.

To help, drop off any of the above items at any local real estate office between Monday (Nov. 26) and Monday, Dec. 3.
