The ongoing winter storm is prompting the District of Squamish to open a warming centre to help people in need.

In a news release, the District said that those who may be affected by possible power outages will have a place to stay.

The warming centre will be located in Brennan Park.

The hours will be as follows:

Wednesday, Dec. 22: 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 23: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Officials are asking people to access the centre via the pool entrance doors located on the south side of the building.

The warming centre will be unsupervised with limited services or amenities provided due to COVID-19 considerations.

Residents are asked to bring their own entertainment to pass the time such as books, or colouring materials for children.

Note that the facility may be operating on generators so residents who utilize the facility would not be permitted to plug in chargers for mobile devices, tablets, laptops or gaming consoles.

The release says the District is following Vancouver Coastal Health’s guidance for community warming centres in the context of COVID-19 and will adhere to all hygiene, cleaning and ventilation protocols.

Masks must be worn at all times and physical distance must be maintained.
