Warnings for failing to secure attractants issued

Conservation officers this week issued 10 warning tickets to Squamish residents for not properly securing garbage and other attractants.

Conservation officers this week issued 10 warning tickets to Squamish residents for not properly securing garbage and other attractants.

The tickets were issued the same week that officials reminded Sea to Sky Corridor residents that with the area's bear population out of hibernation, it's imperative that garbage, bird seed, pet food and other attractants be kept secured and out of bears' reach.

"The bears are out and they are hungry," Sgt. Peter Busink of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service said in a statement. "People who do not secure their attractants could face a charge under the B.C. provincial Wildlife Act."

Residents are also urged to report all wildlife sightings by phoning 1-877-952-7277.
