Squamish Valley fire still being patrolled for hot spots

The North Cloudburst Mountain wildfire started Aug. 3 and is still classified by the BC Wildfire Service as under control but not out.

It isn't out yet.

The North Cloudburst Mountain wildfire that started Aug. 3, is still classified by the BC Wildfire Service as under control but not out.

"We are now in the patrol and extinguishing hotspots phase, which is one of the final stages before we can call the fire out," said Julia Carranci, fire information officer with the Coastal Fire Centre.

As of Tuesday, Aug. 17, three personnel were working the fire to ensure all hot spots were snuffed out, she said, adding that while the recent rain is welcome, it isn't enough to reverse current dry conditions.

"The forest is still very dry. It is going to take quite a bit of rain to get back to where we were, say in March of this year and so we are still in a time when fires are a possibility and we still have to be extremely thorough, even though there has been some rain."

Campfires are still prohibited in B.C.

She said there has been some confusion with folks thinking beach fires are OK, but they are prohibited.

The Squamish Valley fire will likely be officially called out in the next few days, but that depends on how many hotspots are found.

"It is very slow, meticulous work and obviously has to be done very thoroughly," she said.

The crew uses heat-sensing equipment and even their hands turning over the soil to check for spots that could still ignite.
