Police are trying to identify a woman found dead at the base of the Stawamus Chief.
On Sunday, Aug. 4, at about 5 p.m. witnesses saw a person fall down the face of the granite monolith, Squamish RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said. A woman had a significant drop and was found dead in the Stawamus Chief Provincial Park in a thickly forested area approximately 30 minutes by foot from the parking lot, he said.
The popular trail remained open as police scoured the area for clues regarding what happened and the woman's identity. A helicopter was brought in and a backpack was located on the mountain in the general area that may be associated with the victim, Pride said. Officers are still trying to confirm where the woman fell from.
At this point it doesn't look like this person was a climber, he said, since no ropes or climbing shoes were found.
Police left flyers asking for information on vehicles in the provincial parking lot. They are monitoring which vehicles remain stationary.
Police released a short description regarding the woman in the hopes to find more witnesses and identify the individual. The Caucasian woman, believed to be in her late twenties or early thirties, had a medium build, blue eyes and curly brown hair. She was wearing green khaki shorts and a blue sports bra.
We did get a couple of calls, Pride said.
