Women's health program relaunched

Initiative aims to builds a better community

The Howe Sound Women's Centre Society is looking to shatter health-care barriers for women with the re-launch of a program promoting wellness.

On Jan. 21, the organization announced the re-launch of the Sea to Sky Women's Health Network, a series of health and wellness events for females throughout the region. The initiative provides accessible and practical health, wellness and safety information to Squamish, Pemberton and Whistler, the centre's executive director Sheila Allen said in a statement.

"By providing women with access to this information, we are empowering them to improve health and wellness outcomes for themselves and their children, something we believe contributes to the wellbeing of our communities as a whole," she said.

Telus handed out additional funding to help re-start the program, while also enabling organizers to increase the frequency, scope and promotion of events, the release stated. Organizers anticipate more than 120 women will attend the workshops annually.

The local women's centre provides such services to create healthier and better communities, said Linda Godin, Telus customer service delivery project manager.

"Access to relevant and reliable health and wellness information is important to Canadians, and my colleagues and I at Telus recognize how critical these opportunities are for our local community members," she said.

The series operates in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, the Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton public libraries and Telus.
