Youth faces charges after assault, shoplifting

Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

A 15-year-old Squamish resident is facing charges in relation to an alleged assault and a shoplifting incident that police say occurred last week in Garibaldi Estates.

On Wednesday (Oct. 5) at around 5:30 p.m., police were called to a report of an assault having occurred in the 40000 block of Tantalus Road, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said in a statement.

A male had been assaulted and threatened by a 15-year-old relative, who was arrested later in the evening. The youth, who cannot be identified under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is also facing a theft charge after an alleged shoplifting incident that occurred earlier in the day at a business in the 1900 block of Garibaldi Way. Police believe the earlier incident led to a confrontation that resulted in the assault, Pride said.

Bikes stolen

Four more mountain bikes were stolen during the past week, continuing a recent string of such thefts.

On Oct. 5, police were alerted to the theft of two bikes from under a ground-level porch in the 3200 block of University Boulevard. The bikes had been locked and it's believed that the bikes were stolen at around 4:30 a.m. The bikes were a white-and-black Specialized Enduro and a copper-and-brown Trek Fuel EX9.

On Friday (Oct. 7), an 18-speed, grey-and-black Kona Coiler bike was among the items stolen when a number of storage lockers were broken into in the 40000 block of Government Road. A main door to the locker area was left unsecured and numerous lockers had their locks cut off, Pride said. A .22-calibre rifle was also among the items stolen.

On Tuesday (Oct. 11), a Specialized Sapphire 28-speed, tan, black and red bike was reported stolen from the carport of a home on Zenith Road in Brackendale. The theft is believed to have occurred between Monday (Oct. 10) at noon and Tuesday at 8 p.m. Access to the carport was gained by removing the hinges from a door, Pride said.

Copper wire stolen

On Thursday (Oct. 6), police received a report that copper wire from the B.C. Hydro Cheekye substation along Squamish Valley Road. A wire fence had been cut to access the material, Pride said.
