85 Days to ride

Sports

Category: women 50+

Why are you taking the Test?

Mostly as an incentive to stay fit. And "the day of" is fantastic - the citizens of Squamish are a wonderful audience, and the volunteers are phenomenal.

How many times have you taken the test?

This will be my sixth race.

What is your best time?

5:21:49. I've won two bronzes in my category and this year I hope to win a silver.

How long have you been racing?

My first race was the Test of Metal in 2000 - I was 47. I really only race in Squamish, Test of Metal and GearJammer.

What's your training regime?

It has to be tough at my age but of course still on a recreational level. I usually combine weights and spin class at the gym all winter then try to ride 4 to 5 times a week during the final 2 to 3 months before race day. This year I didn't have the advantage of the gym or my trainer Bev Munro, so I took up running. Turns out it's fun!

Do you have an energy boost secret?

When it's hot out, mix your energy drink with water. I use Accelerade.

What kind of frame do you use?

Kona Kikapu Deluxe.

What do you expect your biggest challenge to be?

The heat. Last year was insanely hot. After 5 hours in that kind of heat, a person can feel pretty bad. I guess the trick is to not be out there over 5 hours.

Do you have an inspiring racer?

They all inspire me. If anything, I am inspired by anyone doing this race at over 40 years old. It's not just the physical challenge but life itself; job and older kids with their own schedules and programs and again parents. I know a lot of riders like this and their example is what keeps me out there myself.
