Automind upsets Galileo

Sweeney's hat trick powers big win over defending champs

What a difference a month makes.

Back on Sept. 25, Automind was blanked by Galileo to sit winless after three games in the Howe Sound Men's Soccer League (HSMSL).

Fast forward to Sunday (Oct. 30) and the tables were turned, with Automind putting together its best performance of the season to down the defending champions 5-1.

"We played great today," said Automind head coach Dave Harrison, who also donned his team's dark blue jersey at times during the win. "We brought in a couple of young kids like Griffin [Dare], who played great and young Matt [Anctil] scored twice for us and played excellent."

Automind was in control for most of the game, taking a 2-1 lead into halftime and adding three in the second half. Harrison said it was a big win for the team.

"We've been stuck on four points for a while," he said, noting the win against Galileo is only the team's second victory on the season. "We've been close in games but we just haven't been scoring."

They certainly got scoring this week, with Anctil scoring twice and Austin Sweeney picking up a hat trick. Harrison also praised both the goalkeeping and the defence, highlighting the return of Chris Rayner as one of the main reasons for the improved play at the back end. Mark Gabriel scored the lone goal for Galileo, who drop to four wins and four losses on the season.

In other action, Khalsa improved to seven wins and one loss after beating Zephyr 7-1. Gary O'Neil picked up four goals to improve to nine goals on the year, with Jared Bird tallying twice and Todd Rippon scoring once. Edgar A. Mujica replied for Zephyr, who fell to zero wins and eight losses on the year.

The afternoon game saw Sikh Temple bounce back after suffering its first loss of the season to defeat the Ellis Moving Eagles 2-0. Bruno Freitas scored his league-leading 11th goal to open the scoring, with Nevin Binning also lighting up the scoreboard. Temple keeps pace with Khalsa, as both teams now possess a 7-1 record. The Eagles drop to three wins, four losses and one draw on the year.

HSMSL action will continue this weekend with the Eagles taking on Galileo, Sikh Temple battling Zephyr and Khalsa challenging Automind in the afternoon game.
