Axemen fall to Nanaimo Hornets in playoff quarterfinal

The Sea to Sky rugby club came up just short in a 26-21 postseason match on Vancouver Island

The Axemen's season is over, but what a season it was.

During its first foray into BC Rugby Division 1 action, the Squamish-based rugby club narrowly fell on April 15 in a 26-21 quarterfinal defeat to the Nanaimo Hornets. The Hornets are a longstanding organization dating back to 1888, when they were founded under the name "Nanaimo Rovers".

"Close game against [Nanaimo] on Vancouver Island. Axemen narrowly miss out but ultimately look back on a successful first season in Division 1," said club representatives in a statement issued to social media. "Lots to be excited about. Time to heal and build for next season."

In order to reach the quarterfinals, the Axemen pulled off a monumental upset against Burnaby Lake earlier this month, ending the previously-undefeated campaign of their Premier Reserve opponent on the road. Before that, club players and coaches displayed plenty of resilience by stringing together three wins to conclude their regular season as a no. 8 seed.
