Busy weekend for Squamish runners

Several locals have strong days pounding the pavement from Boston to Vancouver

Squamishs running community certainly made an impact on the weekend, with local runners competing both in the Boston Marathon on April 18 and the Vancouver Sun Run on April 17.

Squamish resident Mike Heiliger took part in the 115th annual 42.2-kilometre Boston run, placing 8,095th out of more than 20,000 racers. Heiliger posted a time of 3:31:32, a pace of 8:04 per mile.

I just hobbled back to my hotel room from finish line in Boston, Heiliger told The Chief in an email. Not one of my better efforts, but I finished. Will be home in a couple of days minus a few toenails!

It was the third time Heiliger has raced in the Boston Marathon. This year, he finished 190th in his age division and 6,532nd for his gender.

Several Squamish runners also competed in the 26th annual Vancouver Sun Run. Some of the more notable male participants were: Volker Schneider, who finished 19th in the mens 40 to 44 category with a time of 38:13; Len Clarkson, who finished 31st in the mens 55 to 59 category with a time of 46:52; Hermann Botcher, who placed 47th in the mens one to 15 category with a time of 45:49; and Rob Leigh, who was 68th in the mens 16 to 18 category.

Local ladies also had strong showings, including: Stephanie Pawluk, who finished sixth in the womens aged one to 15 category with a time of 45:43; Emma Segussi and Taeko Terauchi, who placed 20th and 21st, respectively, in the womens 35 to 39 with times of 45:47 and 46:18, respectively; Heather Sidsworth, who placed 22nd in the womens 60 to 64 category with a time of 58:29; and Meghan Roberts, who placed 31st in the womens 16 to 18 category with a time of 48:53.
