The Howe Sound Men's Fastball League (HSMFL) is set to return to the "Homer Dome" at Brennan Park for its 30th year of action tonight (May 13), kicking off the year by honouring two of the league's long-time supporters.
The league plans to recognize Rick Hunter and Bob Fast for their contributions and have their names added to the HSMFL appreciation wall in both the players' and builders' categories.
"Back in the day both of these guys were good players and as they got older they kept an active interest in keeping up the infrastructure of the league," said HSMFL representative Jason Wright. "Bob helped provide concrete for the dugouts and gave financial support for the league while Rick did the same and also was heavily involved in the trenching of our field's lights."
This year the HSMFL will be made up of four teams - the B & B Construction Diggers, the Squamish Legion Lagers, the Steelers and the defending champion Squamish Wizards. Teams play a 20-game schedule, with games on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 6:45 and 8:30 p.m. After the regular season, the playoffs will take place with the first-place team taking on the fourth-place team and second playing third and continuing on until one team is left standing.
Wright said the annual Squamish Days Fastball Tournament, which runs during the Loggers Sports Festival, is also expected to return. He noted that details still need to be ironed out but tournaments in the past have featured teams from all over the province. Wright added that those who want to take part in the tournament or want more information on the league can do so by contacting him through email at [email protected].
The season also begins tonight, when the Diggers take on the Lagers at 6:45 p.m. and the Steelers battle the Wizards at 8:30 p.m. For additional information on the league, visit the HSMFL Facebook page, which can be accessed by typing "Howesoundmensfastball League" into the search bar.
