The top two teams in the G&T Pool & Spa Contracting Sea to Sky Men's Soccer League will face each other this Saturday (April 16) for the top prize after a pair of squeaker wins in the semifinals.
League champions Whistler FC eked out a 1-nil victory against Ocean Port United in the first Premiership Cup semifinal Sunday (April 10) at Centennial Fields, while the second-place MBC Rangers got past third-place rivals Ellis Moving by the same score to move into the finals.
On the Divisional Cup side, it'll be the Brew Pub against Canex Thunder in the finals after each won their matches by a 3-nil margin, the Brew Pub against Lil'WAT7uhl and the Canex Thunder shutting down Lions Gate Ink-Laser. Lions Gate kept the match scoreless through the first half, but only a couple of minutes into the second half, Thunder's Greg Joseph accepted a beautiful cross beating the check of his father, Lions Gate's Greg Joseph, and scored. Lions Gate came close to scoring shortly after with an opportunity to tie the game. Thunder's Brett Le Compte scored another goal with an assist from Chris Stockley shortly afterwards. Stockley then set it up again and assisted Greg Joseph who scored making the final score 3-0 for the Thunder.
On the loss, Lions Gate's Jose Oreamuno waxed philosophical. "It was a nice dream but the guys beat us in the second half. It would have been nice to have had one goal."
The finals will follow the Squamish Youth Soccer Association season wrap-up and awards ceremony and the league organizers are hoping young soccer players and their parents stick around after the awards to watch the men's league.
