Flawless victory for Wizards

Local fastpitch team dominates Loggers Sports Tournament

After a disappointing end to their season in the Lower Mainland Fastball League (LMFL), the Squamish Wizards bounced back, going undefeated in the annual Loggers Sports Tournament and beating the Sar Majors 2-0 in the final on Monday (Aug. 1).

Plagued by poor weather and several cancellations, the Wizards only played 12 games in the LMFL regular season and then were prematurely bounced in the second round of the playoffs after less than nine players showed up and the team was forced to forfeit.

But it was a completely different story at the Loggers Sports Tournament for the Wiz. Eight teams from all over the Lower Mainland took to the Brennan Park fields for three days of fastball action. The teams were divided into two four-team groupings for the round robin, with the teams criss-crossing for the playoffs.

The Wizards kicked off the tourney on Saturday (July 30) with an 8-0 drubbing of the Ravens, followed up by a 10-1 beat down of the aforementioned Majors. Round-robin action continued for the team on Sunday (July 31) as they doubled Gibsons 8-4.

Playoff action for the team kicked off on Sunday evening, with the Wiz taking out the Dukes 7-0. On Monday, the Wiz beat Gibsons and then blanked the Majors to win the tournament without a loss. In the third-place game, the Meralomas beat Gibsons 8-1.

In local fastball news, the Howe Sound Men's Fastball League is moving on to the postseason after concluding the regular season on Wednesday (Aug. 3). Games will start on Monday (Aug. 8), with the finals planned on Friday (Aug. 12). Full playoff details are still yet to be determined.
