Howe Sound outscores Burnaby

Sports

The Howe Sound novice ringette team faced the aptly-named Burnaby Ice Devils Saturday (Nov. 5) in a game of strong skating and awesome goaltending.

The Ice Devils showed off their impressive skating skills, but in the end it was the steady goaltending talent of Howe Sound's Brendan Bantayen that ensured the decisive 7-3 victory. Brendan took more than 30 shots to the net, allowing only three by him.

"It was a great game, the goaltender kept us in the game the whole game," said coach Kent Warwick. "That Brendan's a pretty good little goalie."

The competition started out slowly. Howe Sound's Jennifer Kion scored the first goal almost halfway through the first period. But once the ice was broken, the heat came fast and furious.

Within four minutes, Howe Sound scored again with a goal by Brielle Mountenay, and two minutes later, Jennifer swept the third goal in, sending the few fans dotting the bleachers to their feet.

Burnaby answered with one point, then Howe Sound's Nicole Pederson netted one last ring before closing the first period 4-1. Nicole's momentum didn't falter in the second period. She scored back-to-back goals, for a game total of three, while Burnaby achieved two more points. Howe Sound's Ryan Fianza ended the game with one last point for a final of 7-3. There were a few more spectators than usual, according to Warwick, which was a treat for the players.

"The kids love it when their fans are out," said Warwick.

Howe Sound will play in Ladner Nov. 20 before facing Fraser Valley in another home game Nov. 26, 11:25 a.m. [email protected]
