The league has been around for decades, but this will be the first full season since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The local soccer league is kicking off its season and looking for new players in hopes of establishing another team.

The Howe Sound Soccer League currently has five teams slated for the season, but Kim Stanley, vice president of the league, said they are looking to create a sixth team this season.

“We currently have five teams in our league. We’re in the process of establishing a new team and we’re kind of looking for players who might want to be interested in playing for that new team.”

The league plays games on Sundays at Brennan Park and will do so until about mid-November, said Stanley. From there, he said they will take a short winter break and pick back up in mid-February and play until early May, where the season will be wrapped with a large tournament. The league also hosts Wednesday drop-in practices and scrimmages for league players during the season.

According to Stanley, the league is open for any gender and players need to be at least 16 years old to play. He said that new players need to pay $35 to register for the league and that teams will decide costs for uniforms and equipment, if necessary.

The league has been around for decades, but this will be the first full season since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We didn't play last year because of COVID and we only played half the season the year before. So this was our first year fully back.”

And despite the competitive nature of soccer, Stanley said it’s an enjoyable league to be in.

“You don’t have to be an all-star,” he said. “It’s obviously competitive — people get out there and they want to win — but it’s a fun league.”

“It's a really good chance to get out and run around and meet some new people, especially for people who are new into town or people who are older who’ve been around town for a while.”
