Interest grows in Adventure Race

Interest in Squamish's first-ever adventure race has been gradually increasing as the event nears its May 1 start date.

Interest in Squamish's first-ever adventure race has been gradually increasing as the event nears its May 1 start date. According to Lucas Rosnau of Frontier Adventure Racing, the organizers of the Salomon Adventure Challenge, team registration has been strong although the event still has team positions available.

"We're really looking forward to starting off the adventure racing season in Squamish," said Rosnau. "Everything is starting to come into place and we're all getting excited to see what's going to happen - the terrain there is awesome and so perfectly matched to what adventure racing is all about."

The Salomon Adventure Challenge pits adventure racers against some of Squamish's most demanding terrain through an undisclosed course. Teams of three athletes will trek, bike, paddle and navigate their way across 40 km of natural obstacles. The race, meant as an introduction into the life of adventure racing, will take between five and eight hours to complete.

From a local standpoint, the volunteer response has also been strong. The Squamish Search and Rescue will be helping with event co-ordination and safety and Camp Summit, the hosts of the event, have been busy getting local merchants involved.

"We've been getting great response from the community," said Camp Summit Director Geoff Park. "A lot of the local businesses and merchants have expressed their willingness to help - so it's great to see the community come together to support another top-notch event in Squamish. We're getting really excited around here, it's really going to be an awesome weekend."

Organizers for the event are still seeking volunteers to help in several different areas. All volunteers receive free camping and two free meals. For more information call Geoff Park or Nicole Carothers at Camp Summit at 1-866-550-1118.
