Prospective young Iron men and women will be competing in Squamish on May 14 in the Kids of Steel Squamish Youth Triathlon and organizers are inviting both children and adults to participate in the event.

Youth under 18 can register in the competition until May 7, and volunteers are still needed to make the event happen.

The event is in its sixth year of operation and the last two years have been organized by race director Roz Gilbert and the rest of the organizing committee made up of Charlene Pawluck, Marcia Collier, and Peggy Lamaire as well as members of the Squamish Titans.

Gilbert has three children competing in the relay portion of the triathlon, where youth will swim, bike and run throughout Squamish. She said it is a fun day for everyone involved.

"The triathlon is totally focused on participation and fun. Many kids do it as a relay. It is all about the fun factor," said Gilbert. "It is totally community focused and it gives kids a slightly different option, because it is a one day event they can do, hopefully year after year."

Volunteers are still needed for before, during, and after the race.

Prior to May 14, people are needed to help deliver race notification flyers to houses along Government Road and Loggers Lane, flagging, picking up equipment and getting food for the after-party. Volunteers are also needed for the triathlon clinic this Sunday, April 30, run by the Squamish Titans.

On the day of the race, volunteers are required to help with set-up, aiding water stations, course sweeping and after the race, with cleanup.

All athletes who participate get a T-shirt, goody bag, participation medal, a post-race celebration, and a chance to win awesome draw prizes. Gilbert said the reward for volunteers would be evident the day of the race.

"When you give a little bit in, what you see on the kid's faces is what you get out. Last year we raced in a monsoon and kids were still smiling."
