It was mission accomplished for Squamish’s Nicky Klimchuk-Brown and Team Canada at the inaugural Federation International de Luge (FIL) World Cup event in Whistler, which wrapped up on Sunday, Dec. 7.
Klimchuk-Brown picked up one silver, one bronze and a fourth place finish during the event and his teammates dominated the Youth division.
Competition kicked off on Thursday, Dec. 4 and the Squamish resident had a combined time of 1:18.286 for his two individual runs, good for fourth place. Team Canada swept the podium with Adam Shippit, Matt Riddle and Reid Watts winning medals.
Later that day, Klimchuk teamed with Lucas Gebauer-Barrett in the youth doubles division and picked up a silver medal. The pair had a combined time of 1:21.778, beating out the Canadian duo of Evan Wildman and Heath Kapryshyn, but falling behind the gold medal duo of Riddle and Watts.
The second part of the event occurred on Saturday, Dec. 6 and Klimchuk-Brown reached the podium in the individual race with a third-place finish. He earned the bronze with a time of 1:18.397 and recorded his fastest top speed (129.71 km/h).
The doubles race on Saturday saw Klimchuk-Brown and Gebauer-Barrett disqualified for carrying too much weight.
Next up for Klimchuk-Brown and the rest of Team Canada is the Junior World Cup event in Park City, UT from Dec. 15 to 16.
