Squamish biathletes fared well at the second race of the B.C. Cup biathlon series in Kelowna this past weekend.
Hunter Sones of the Callaghan Winter Sports Club (CWSC) won the Junior Boys 4.5 kilometre sprint on Saturday (Feb. 11) beating out the second-place racer by 53 seconds. The strong finish put Sones in a great position for the Junior Boys six-kilometre mass start race on Sunday (Feb. 12) and he managed to take home a silver medal.
"It was an amazing race with ideal conditions and tough competition," Sones said, noting that he hit 23 of 25 targets over the two races. "It was awesome that my first races as a CWSC athlete went well, and it was a great lead-up to the B.C. Winter Games where I hope for a repeat weekend."
Sones wasn't the only Squamish resident who took home hardware, as Holden Jones of the West Coast Nordics won the gold in the Juvenile three-kilometre sprint race on Saturday and followed with another gold in the Juvenile four-kilometre mass start race on Sunday.
Squamish's Cedric St. Pierre-Borchert also took home a silver in the Youth Men's 10 kilometre mass start competition on Sunday. Eli Chappell, who made his B.C. Cup debut at the event, made a good first impression, finishing fifth in both the Juvenile three-kilometre race on Saturday and the four-kilometre mass start on Sunday.
Next up for all the biathletes will be the B.C. Cup race at Whistler Olympic Park on March 3 and 4.
