Men's soccer league in heated race toward playoffs

Sports

The Sea to Sky Hotel/G&T Pool & Spa men's soccer league is two games away from the end of the regular season, and the race for second place is neck-and-neck.

Teams have a potential of earning six points over the next two games, which means Whistler F.C. has cinched first place with a seven-point lead over current second place team Ellis Moving. But from there, all bets are off.

Ellis Moving, M.B.C. Rangers, Ocean Port and Brew Pub are all within six points of one another.

"There's a lot of room left for the middle four to do a lot of bouncing around from second place to fifth," said Phil Ellis of Ellis Moving. "Anybody can end up anywhere."

And nobody's ruling out last place teams Canex Thunder and Lil'WAT7uhl to upset the balance.

"Don't let the points fool you, they're good teams. And they've lost games by a factor of a tie or just one goal and they've been contenders," said Ellis.

The eight teams square off next at Brennan Park Sunday (March 20), beginning at 10 a.m. with the two top teams facing off.
