Pedalling through the Valleycliffe of the Dolls

Following a trail of cheap plastic dolls through the woods isn't the most conventional way to spend four hours on a bike, but it's surely the most creative.

Dubbed one of the coolest rides in the mountain bike world by Cam McRae of North Shore Mountain Biking, Beyond the Valleycliffes of the Dolls (BVOD) is both a freeride race and fundraiser for Squamish Search and Rescue.

Now in its sixth year, the event was founded by local biker and writer Bryan Raiser who wanted to encourage people to join SORCA.

"It was originally a way to cater to another segment of the community that wants all the perks of the races without all the pressure," said Raiser.

"Basically it's the perfect ride ... great friends, great views, great trails, and halfway through a four or five hour ride, there is nothing better than a feast of fresh fruit and refreshments."

Raiser is referring to the famous fruit stand, where riders can recharge half way through the ride. As in other years, riders can expect excellent terrain and unusual trails a little off the beaten path. The only difference in this year's race is the more technical sections will no longer be judged. That doesn't mean the riders that partake in the event don't have to be skilled.

"You have to be technical, as long as you're comfortable on technical trails and comfortable 'hike-a-biking' - there are basically trails that are too steep to pedal," he said.

"This year it's nothing but a pleasure cruise where the official line is the easy line and everyone is encouraged to know and ride within their limits. Of course, the challenging lines are still there, and no one can physically stop you from riding them, they're just not part of the official route."

Those interested in doing the BVOD must be members of GRMBA clubs (SORCA, NSMB) or pay an extra $10 fee for insurance before the race on Saturday June 2, at 11 a.m. which starts the top of Westway Ave.

The day will end with an after party at the Brew Pub where minors will be welcome. The course is weather permitting and riders should have armour.

Entry is $25 in advance or$35 the morning of the race.Register at Corsa Cycles, Tantalus Bike Shop or at trailhead. For more information go to www.cynicalsunshine.com.
