Brennan Park Arena was packed with young aspiring hockey stars at the first-ever Remembrance Day H4 Tournament last Friday to Sunday (Nov. 11 to 13).
Teams from Chilliwack, Coquitlam, Mission and Hope made the trek to Squamish to participate in the tournament, with each squad playing four games. According to Squamish H4 head coach Derek Cranfield, it was a good debut for the tournament.
"This was the first tournament hosted by Squamish Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) in some time," he said. "And with the great success we had, we look forward to hosting this event each year as well as looking at other tournaments to host as soon as possibly this spring."
Cranfield said that statistics and results weren't kept over the weekend but that the tournament is designed to build team unity and give the kids another opportunity to hone their skills.
"The Annual Remembrance Day H4 Tournament is for teams that consist of eight-year-old players and is intended for teams as a season-opening eventthat is intended to bring teams together and promote fun and fair play," he said.
The SMHA also has a parents' night out planned for Friday (Nov. 18) at the Living Room in the Executive Suites hotel. The event, a fundraiser for the Squamish Atom rep hockey team, costs $40 for those interested to attend and will include a dinner along with a silent auction.
Yet another fundraiser will take place on Feb. 19, when the SMHA invites the community to check out Western Hockey League (WHL) action in Vancouver and support local players. The Vancouver Giants will take on the Red Deer Rebels on the evening and proceeds from the game's 50/50 draw will benefit the SMHA.
