Screaming Eagles set to take on top team

Sports

The Screaming Eagle Atom House boys are making their mark within the minor hockey league. The nine and 10-year old boys used strong defensive strategies to tie North Vancouver 4-4 at the Brennan Park rink Saturday (Nov. 12), bringing them to fourth place in the league.

"They're watching the Canucks' [Ed] Jovanovski," laughed coach Tom Sloan. "The defensive players are jumping into the game."

Connor Sloan is currently leading the Eagles' offense with 13 goals and seven assists, but each one of the latest game's goals came from different player's lines.

And Sloan said tandem goaltending by Brandon Koop and Mason Beauregard has been "outstanding".

The Screaming Eagles were the first on the board Saturday with Steven Rollins shooting the puck past North Van's goalie unassisted. North Van quickly returned with a goal, but less than a minute later Squamish's Levi Janzen scored another to finish the period 2-1. North Van came out strong in the second with a goal in the first few minutes of play. Another North Van goal was scored before Connor answered with an unassisted point of his own to tie it 3-3. The game looked good for the Eagles when Karmen Mooney scored with the assistance of Brayden Lee in the last few minutes of play, but with less than two minutes left, North Van slapped the puck in net to tie it 4-4.

Many of the players this year are new to the league so coaches Sloan, Ed Koop and Steve Beauregard will focus on the basics of positioning and how to kill off penalties and dump the puck before travelling to Whistler to face the league's number one team Saturday (Nov. 19)[email protected]
