SORCA Loonie youth race brings out the sun

Sports

The Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association's (SORCA) second youth Loonie Race was a huge success. Held Sunday (April 17) with 14 riders aged 12 to 18 attending the event, which some say was actually responsible for the beginning of this week's warm, dry weather.

SORCA Youth Coordinator Jim Douglas is very excited about the level of interest the event is generating in the community. "If this keeps up, the event could become more popular than the adult Toonie event."

First-time racer Emma Bowerman continues to show her new-found commitment to women's CAT 3 mountain-bike racing. Sam Bowerman also showed winning form in the CAT 3 men's. Newcomers Hayden Drygas narrowly squeezed out his brother Evan, winning the CAT 2 males podium position.

Gavin Arnott and Philip Cairns of Team Squamish battled throughout their 4 laps with Gavin barely beating out Phillip with a time of 1:03:35. A significant amount of pizza and pop disappeared after the race, generously provided by Little Caesar's and Extra Foods.

Complete race results and season standings are available online at www.sorca.ca.

The events are aimed at 12 to 18-year-olds who want the challenge of their own "low key" race event. The next event is scheduled for May 8 at Alice Lake.

Sign up from 2 until 2:45 p.m. with the race starting at 3 p.m. sharp. All participants must be SORCA members with the Cycling BC insurance option.

Participants will receive "points" for top three finishes as well as participation in each event. Bonus points will be awarded to youth who attend other SORCA events such as trail maintenance days, which means that top race finishers may not be the season end prize winners. Cost is $1 and covers post-race refreshments.

Check www.sorca.ca/youth for a calendar of events and updates or email Jim at [email protected].
